Finding Effective Acne Care
By: Dr. Benjamin Barankin and Dr. Anatoli Freiman
Acne. Pimples. Zits. Regardless of what you call it, acne is a common condition that affects about 90 per cent of adolescents and can be common in adults, including pregnant women and nursing moms.
The effects can be emotional and physical, with significant long term consequences if left untreated. For teens and parents, getting back into the school routine also means getting back on-track with a skincare regimen to help maintain clear skin, and there are many options that can help.
As dermatologists, we recommend the following steps to get on-track with acne management:
1. Recognize that it’s a problem – despite being very common, acne can affect self-image by making those affected feel unattractive, and may cause embarrassment, lack of self-confidence and lowered self-esteem.
2. One size does not fit all – with many acne treatment products on the market, it can be difficult to navigate all of the options. Acne products work in different ways, depending on their active ingredients. Some products work by killing the bacteria responsible for acne, while others reduce the inflammation. This brings us to our next point…
3. Seek professional advice – effective therapy options are available to reduce breakouts, minimize the risk of scars, improve appearance and enhance self-image. A dermatologist can help patients determine the most appropriate treatment option for their unique case.
