toddler alert!

3

My toddler is at that stage where he is grabbing everything he can reach and emptying my cupboards. Although that is frustrating what I’m more concerned about is if he ever found our medicine cabinet. It’s up high but if he got into it what do I do? I’ve heard there is stuff to make them throw up if they swallow anything, what’s that called?

  1. What you’re thinking about is called ipecac syrup and it is no longer recommended my doctors. There are several poisons that end up doing more damage coming back up then just staying down, so it no longer available to the general public. If your child swallows something you think is dangerous take him to the emergency room. I advise you find where the nearest 24hr one is before you need to use it.

  2. I’m glad you have it all up high. You should also ask at a children’s store for safety locks for the doors of your medical cabinet. Why even give your child the opportunity to get to the medicine.

  3. If that is a genuine concern talk to a doctor about what to do in that situation. You can also tell them what medicines you have in your cupboard and they can tell you how harmful different doses could potentially be to a child. Also 131 126 is a good number to have on hand – it’s the poisons information centre.
