I know my son is gifted and yet his year 2 teacher just thinks he’s got ADHD. How do I convince him otherwise?

I had the same problem with my son and his teacher. The teacher came to me and asked me if he should know anything, has he been tested for ADHD and all of that. I told the teacher that my son was actually very bright and he is possible bored in class (an assessment made by our previous school’s councilor). The teacher refused my conclusion and said ‘no he must be ADHD’. I was really stressed about it thinking ‘why do you need a label? Why can’t you just teach my child as he is’. Anyway, long story short, after about 2 weeks the teacher got to know my son better and he came to me and said ‘wow I think you’re right, I think he is actually quite bright and he’s just a little quirky.’ Gee go figure that a mother may actually know her own child!

Firstly I walk my son to school (it was about 3 blocks) to get any last wriggles out of him before class. Then I give my son a quick pep-talk before he goes off to class every morning telling him to remember to be extra attentive to the teacher, to learn all he could and to be the best he could be. Then after school we go exploring in the bush, read some fantastic books and learn lots of extra things that school just didn’t offer to stimulate that wonderful brain of his. He managed to fly under the radar at school and go well in tests.

We had a problem with a teacher that was new to our school. I made an appointment and talked with her and actually asked her to talk to the other teachers in the school since they already knew my son. After she spoke to the other teachers she had a clearer picture of my son’s personality and started to work with him more, rather then against him.

Is this a new school? Or just a new teacher to your school? When I had an issue with a teacher when we were new to a school I took in old report cards and some work to show them what my daughter was actually capable of. The teacher then realized what she was able to do and realized how ahead of the class she was. He then started to give her more work and puzzles to do after she had finished her work.
