Encourage it as much as you can but don’t stress about it. I have a friend who home school her son and has read a lot on child literacy. Did you know that in a lot of countries they don’t even bother to start teaching kids to read until they are more like 10-12 years of age? And those kids end up being able to read fluently in a very short period of time. I don’t know why we torture our kids at such an early age to read. Experts say we shouldn’t even bother till age 7 since that part of their brain hasn’t even clicked on yet (with the rare exception). Think of it this way – do you know any of your friends or peers that doesn’t know how to read? I’m guessing not – everyone learns how to read eventually.

I have the same issue with my son. What seems the most successful with him is I let him choose the book (then at least I know he wants to read it) then we take turns reading a page each. He seems to be happy with that compromise. Sometimes I still end up reading the last part of the book but at least he read some of it.

It doesn’t matter what they read, as long as they read. So give farmer browns chickens the heave ho and go get a star wars magazine! Or Ben Ten or Bob the Builder, or whatever your little man is into. He’ll be more motivated when he actually enjoys the content.
