I recently started a nanny share and I need to stock the house with healthy meal options.
I was considering an organic delivery service. Anyone tried it?
I have no clue in the kitchen and I’m used to mainly doing family dinners (lots of pizza lately) with my son at daycare. I figured that the delivery service would force us to have healthy meals with lots of fresh fruit and veg…my concern is that I will still “make” pizza and have a lot of rotting veggies…with no ideas for what the nanny should do for the kids.

We get organic delivery and I have to admit, I love it. My boys get excited for the weekly delivery and always want to help me unpack. Not only can you customize your fruit and veg. order so you never or always get certain items, you can also add items like milk, flour, etc. If there are left overs at the end of the week, we just juice them and drink it. Lastly, they always send along recipes to go along with what’s in the basket they’re generally tasty and easy to make. It adds variety to our menu and I don’t have to worry about the groceries as often. Here in Toronto I know of two companies – Mama Earth Organics (East End) and Front Door Organics (West End).

I used an organic delivery service for a couple of years when we had limited transportation. We loved the ease of placing our order online and having it arrive at our front door. But, for us the cost wasn’t worth it once our transportation situation improved. Now we go to the store ourselves — we spend more time, but save more money. You can always try it out for a while and see how it goes.
Another thing to consider is in our case you had to get a minimum of $30 each week (or cancel that week all together). Check out if the companies you are considering have minimums.

So I’m trying Front Door Organics. The service is great but I’m still getting used to what it is I need as I’m used to shopping daily as opposed to having a whole wack of food at once. The recipes they send are helpful though. They’ve been doing an Ontario only promotion that makes me feel good and it does seem to be cheaper than Loblaws at least. I did get some yucky bugs in my broccoli the other day but they’re sending me replacements. However, after boiling the little critters I really can’t get the image out of my mind…
