Will I have enough milk to feed the twins I’m expecting? Most mothers use all their milk on one baby. Am I going to have to supplement?

You will find your body will create all the milk that is demanded from it.

Not all mothers of single children can breastfeed them, it just depends on your milk supply. I didn’t have a lot of milk when I had triplets but the doctors still recommended that I gave my boys the milk I had. Firstly there is the old adage that breast is best – it is the perfect concoction of vitamins and minerals your babies need, plus it is just the most incredibly beautiful bonding experience for you and your babies, nothing could take the place of that.

A girlfriend and I had twins within weeks of each other. I found I had plenty of milk for my two, but my girlfriend had to supplement her twins with a bottle of formula. She still breastfed what she had but she just didn’t seem to have enough milk – it doesn’t make you any less of a mother and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

It took a bit to build up my supply but we just kept working at it. I had to supplement for the first month until my little ones got the hang of it and gained enough weight. I won’t lie, it was much more difficult to get the hang of feeding two babies then when I nursed my first born. I went weekly to the breastfeeding clinic. By month two we were sailing and my supply met their needs. They still took a formula bottle from time to time – especially if they were both starving and I couldn’t get them to latch at the same time. We had a very successful nursing journey. They recently stopped nursing in May – three months before they turned two.
