SMART Love of Learning: Win a SMART Board!

Practicalmum.com is honored to be a part of the SMART Love of Learning Blog tour – another wonderful Mom Central Campaign. I jumped at the chance to be a part of this because SMART Boards revolutionized my teaching.  It made my lessons more interactive, and engaging (not that my sparkling personality wasn’t engaging enough  ) and the children loved using it. It brought lessons to life.

I consider myself a recovering educator these days. I am taking time out of the classroom to be home with my own little kiddos.  I am saving my coins to buy a touch screen computer so that I can use Smart board technologies in my tutoring lessons. That’s how much I love it and believe in it.

SMART technologies has launched the “SMART Love of Learning” campaign.  It acknowledges and celebrates all of the teachers who have impacted individuals around the world, and it all comes down to one simple question:

Who do you think is the best teacher in the world?

Over the past 15 years of teaching, I have seen it all; the good, the bad and the ugly.  Teachers come in all shapes, sizes, strengths and personalities.  I don’t know how to single out one individual. So I thought I would summarize 5 characteristics that would embody the best teacher in the world.

5. Adaptable Teachable moments pop up without any warning, and some days the lesson plans simply need to be filed for another day.  Carpe Diem. Being a teacher embodies a whole slew of careers: educator, therapist, counselor, coach, social worker, advocate, motivator, doctor… you get the drift. There is no way to know which hat will be required on any day.

4. Resourceful Knowing how to make lemonade out of a bowlful of lemons is a skill that is critical in educating. Few schools have unlimited funding and resources at their disposable, so being crafty is required to bring lessons to life. Also, knowing where to access for support for your students is key.  The teacher is frequently the student’s biggest advocate.

3. Passionate: When the passion of teaching and learning disappear… it’s time to hang up the chalk. Passion transcends a broad spectrum: from caring for children, to discovering ways to teach to the variety of learning styles… passion is required to fuel it all.

2. An active listener: Children have enough people talking at them.  They need someone to listen and hear what they need, want or are interested in. Kids are likely the best teachers out there.  We just forget to listen to them!  Don’t believe me?  Put a child and an adult in front of a SMART Board and see who is able to use it more effectively within 20 minutes – then teach the other how to use it. HINT: it won’t be the adult.

1. A lifelong learner: The best teachers are those who want to learn, who want to update or try new things.  Those who will adapt their program to new and effective technologies.  Those who will inspire others to be curious, to ask questions about the world around and them take action to make this world a better place.
