Sleeping with a bottle

A bottle settles my little man at night, he just doesn’t go to sleep without it. A girlfriend told me the other day told me it was really dangerous to leave a bottle in the crib – is she right?

Both of my children used to take a bottle to bed. Once they fell asleep I would go in and remove it from their crib. They are both fine. I think you have to do what feels right for you.

I know first hand the result of this as an ex of an ex of mine did this and the poor little girl had to have all her teeth removed and replaced with silver ones. This could have easily been avoided by not taking the easy way out. As long as you do what sokeeffe did above and remove it right away, that is fine…

Your girlfriend is right, and what’s more is you have now trained your baby to not settle unless he has his bottle so it may be hard to get him out of that habit. Having a bottle in bed can be a choking hazard.

More then being dangerous it can cause an annoying habit for you! If your little man must have a bottle for bed he may drink so much that he will fill his nappy perhaps to overflowing and be wet and uncomfortable and call out to you in the middle of the night. This will also make toilet training in a few years more difficult.

My son used to fall asleep with a bottle too. Then a midwife told me that milk can be quite high in sugar and you don’t want that on his teeth all night else he could end up with rotting teeth. What I did was give him a small drink before bed, brush his teeth then give him a dummy. He then still had his milk (only a smaller amount then a whole bottle), and had the comfort of sucking on a dummy.
