Little Girls And Their Bits…

3

My 2 ½ year old daughter keeps touching herself. Whenever she is naked she starts to fiddle down there and I often find her with her hands down her pants. It can be really embarrassing when people are over or we’re in public. I’d expect as much from a boy but not a girl! Is this normal? How do I make her stop?

  1. Sexual curiosity is normal. Male or female, all children get to a stage where they discover their bodies, and they also discover that touching certain places feels good. All you need to do is explain to your daughter that we don’t do those kinds of things in public or when other people are around, if she wants to continue she should go to her room alone.

  2. Hi there,
My daughter is the exact same way. When she is getting out of the bath or changing she always feels the need to touch her private area. It is extremely embarrassing. So far, I haven’t found a way to stop her from doing it. But at least I know I’m not alone.

Whatever you do don’t freak out and make a big deal out of it. Doing this will make your toddler feel embarrassed and ashamed of what should be something pleasurable. I know it can make you feel awkward but it is perfectly normal, it’s no different to discovering their nose or their tongue or their toes. Whenever your toddler is doing it in public just calmly tell her that we shouldn’t do that when other people are around and calmly ask her to stop, no big drama 
